Country Box February 2024: Prize Fighting at the Texas Troubadour Theater
Where music and boxing meet for melodic mania
When a new month rolls around, it is time for another edition of Country Box, where music and boxing meet.
Started by longtime promotor and boxing lifer Jimmy Adams through his company Jimmy Adams Promotions in February 2023, Country Box has been a monthly event where grassroots boxing has returned to Nashville. In Music City style the fierce action in the ring is paired with the music that made the city famous. This Tuesday, February 6th will be the latest rendition of the event, and the year anniversary show.
Providing the musical entertainment for the evening will be Landon Wall. He is a Nashville-based artist signed to CMA that can grab an audience with his powerful yet soothing voice. He’s starring regularly on Broadway and is ready to bring the energy to the Troubadour. He’ll be leading off the show and providing entertainment in between the fights, keeping the energy and excitement high all evening.
Country Box provides artists with a unique opportunity to not just perform but to tell stories and reach a wide audience thanks to the wide broadcast distribution. A smaller venue like the Texas Troubadour Theater allows artists to make connections and be seen in a different environment from a packed Broadway stage.
In the ring, the action will feature 7 exciting fights. Christy Martin, former WBC world champion and International Boxing Hall of Famer is now serving as the astute matchmaker. Bouts will feature weights ranging from super flyweight to heavyweight.
The main event will feature Ryan Shaw (6-0-0 6 KOs) against Vit Y (7-6-1 4 KOs) in the super flyweight division. Both fighters have won often by stoppage and a lower weight class like super flyweight (max weight is 115 pounds) can have some of the fastest action in the sport. Scheduled for 6 rounds, this fight probably won’t go the distance.
Another undefeated fighter Iman Lee (8-0-0 6 KOs) has made a splash to start his career by reeling off an impressive series of wins. He’s taking on Devon Jones (5-11-1 1 KO) who will provide a unique challenge. Lee is a young fighter taking on a more experienced southpaw. Fighting a left-handed fighter can be a confusing experience, with both timing and distance thrown off. We’ll see how Lee responds to the challenge in their 6 round bout.
In one of boxing’s most competitive divisions, welterweight, Terell Bostic (9-2-0 1 KO) is hoping to make his mark sooner rather than later. After a long layoff, he stormed into 2023 with 3 fights and 2 wins and will fight for the 4th time in a calendar year. This is more common for young fighters with 4-round bouts, but Bostic has been competing in 6 and 8-round contests. His opponent, Pedro Hernandez (7-17-1 2 KOs) has also been busy, with 3 fights in 2023. He’s also a southpaw with an experience edge over Bostic, which might come into play for the two fighters who more commonly win by decision. We’ll see who comes out of the 6 round fight with the win.
Super middleweight is not traditionally a division in which Puerto Rican fighters flourish, but Luis J Rodriguez Fernandez (12-0-0 11 KOs) is looking to change that. A powerful fighter, he’s only fought 34 of a possible 82 rounds in his career so far, stopping all but one opponent before the scheduled time. He’ll have 6 rounds to try and get Javier Frazier (8-27-1 4 KOs) out of there. However, he’s been a cruiserweight and has even fought heavyweights (see his two-fight series against rising Nashville boxing star Erick Arellano in previous Country Box fight nights) so the power Fernandez yields might not phase him.
Over some of the recent Country Box shows, Weusi Johnson (3-32-1) has become a fixture. He’s provided strong tests for several young fighters and is trying to change his own luck in the ring. He’ll face off against Elon de Jesus (5-1-2 4 KOs) who is working on trying to get himself righted after a draw in his most recent fight. This super bantamweight fight has the opportunity to steal the show with two fighters who need a win in their six-round fight.
When you get heavyweights in the ring, you get the potential for fireworks with every punch. Kahlil Smoot (8-3-0 7 KOs) owns fight-changing power in both hands. He’s looking to put that on display against Conway Beaudry (0-3-0) who hasn’t had the greatest luck against big punchers in the past. It is only a four-round bout, but it could still end earlier.
One of the best parts of grassroots boxing efforts like Country Box is seeing new fighters. Jacob Riley Solis (1-0-0 1 KO) only debuted in December and is now back in the ring, taking on Tracey Coppedge (0-1-0) who debuted in September. With careers just starting anything is possible from these fighters. It’s an unpredictable 4 round fight.
The fights are also set to be broadcast in over 100 million homes on
